The Curious Case of Right to Bear Arms.

The mass shooting that took place at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida took 17 innocent lives. The lawmakers would blame the mental state of the shooter but what they forget to mention is that under the liberal laws of most conservative government, the shooter was able to purchase a gun. The only criteria that he had to fulfil was to just reach an age of 18 years. The age when lawmakers think that the subject can handle a gun but is not capable of drinking liquor.

Let’s compare this incident with a hypothetical one and analyze current scenario.

Consider a city isolated from the world by miles and lagging the technological advancement. No walkie-talkie, no patrolling car, no mobile phone, no 911 and only a Bayonet for a weapon. The city was still developing and had recently won its independence from the clutches of their oppressor with violent revolution fought with the bayonet.

After some time, the city was attacked by some random sleeper cell belonging to that oppressor regime. The terrorists of those sleeper cells were attacking under disguise, for the sole purpose of spreading terror and destabilizing the newly achieved independence.

The mayor passed a law in the city saying that every resident of the city has right to keep and bear arms. The residents were armed for the necessity of a well-regulated militia for the security of a free state because the military and police force was still not adequate to protect the citizens in each and every corner of the city.

The proximity to the arm was the ultimate source of survival and winning any conflict.

The residents protected themselves and the independence of the state by using arms.

Then came the production unit of Bayonet in that city to meet the demands.

The technology advances and with time, all of the sleeper cell was neutralized. No threat was present for the security of a free state.

After some time, the Mayor died and was replaced by his son.

The supply of bayonet exceeded the demand and now the manufacturer wanted to empty their products piling in their factory. So by the influence of money and prestige, the manufacturer decreased the age restriction of buying bayonet to 18 from 21, via the Mayor.

They also opened some training shop where the arm fanatic can practice their bayonet skills and attack animals under the pretence of training. Meanwhile, technology was flourishing and the security personals were now equipped with walkie-talkie and bicycle.

The son of the Mayor wanted to repeal the law of Right to Arm but a sweetener from that Manufacturer lobby prevented the Mayor from repealing the law. The training shop started to open in each and every corner of the neighborhood and the violent rage of many maniacs was satisfied and found a place to flourish.

One of the nutcase from a training store was not content with animals and so he attacked an innocent passerby in a broad daylight. Luckily for the manufacturer of Bayonet and unluckily for that passerby, the passerby was unarmed and was unable to defend himself.

The Manufacturer was on the seventh heaven after the incident. The incident just provided him with a potential surge of customers. Luckily, the victim survived the critical wound and the manufacturer hired that victim to showcase the need for arms. Their sale surged and the Mayor under the influence of the kickbacks expressed the desire to arm each and every resident for the sake of pure defense.

Instead of snatching the bayonet from that nutcase, the system gave another bayonet to the victim for the sole purpose of defense.

The incident of random attack increased day by day, proportional to the violent fits of the lunatics that were self-trained from those training stores.

The victims united and revolted against the Mayor. The Mayor had already suggested everyone to arm themselves but that didn’t work.

So he once again increased the age restriction by to 21 from 18.

The problem still persists but none of the influential residents were pointing their finger to the manufacturer lobby.

If the manufacturing of the weapons is itself shut down, the attacking maniacs can easily be disarmed and rendered harmless. But the question is that who can Question the existence of the Manufacturing plant when most of the influential residents were benefitting from that plants, directly or indirectly.

The shooting incident in Florida opened the eyes of many and the Senate passed a bill that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21 and require a three-day waiting period for most weapons.

The founding father included in the second amendment the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The reason was simple to protect the newly achieved independence.

Right now that same amendment is used to boost the sales of arms.

This article in Medium clearly states how useless and baseless the arguments made by arm-lobby for possession of arms.

The mere possession of arms urges the violent instinct of a rational humane. Like the possession of bike encourages oneself to ride it. The possession of rosary urges oneself to chant the name of Bhagwan, likewise, the possession of arms urges oneself to use it and sometimes some individuals are not satisfied with the confinement of shooting ranges and uses their firearm on innocent lives.

Gandhiji said, an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

Likewise, a gun for a gun only ends up making the whole world vicious.
