For, even one of the wandering senses overpowers the mind and can lead the intellect astray, just as a strong wind sweeps a boat off its chartered course on the water.

Bhagavad-Gita-Chp-2-Verse-67-Shloka-HBR-Patel

Bhagwan Shri Krishna helps Arjuna to understand the importance of controlling every sense to attain a state of enlightenment. One must control all the senses to attain the state of equanimity.

But can’t anyone attain the equanimity of the mind just by controlling one sense? To overcome the desire and to attain a state of total equanimity, one should totally control all the senses. Bhagwan Shri Krishna mentions this in a clear-cut metaphor to prove the point. The example of a ship sailing in the water is an apt example to prove the point.

A ship in the water can be easily swept away by strong winds and can go off the charted path to reach its destination. The ship can easily be diverted from the set course. Just as a ship, even the slightest of distraction can lead us away from the path of equanimity.

So, one must abstain from giving in on any desires to control their mind and stay on the course of equanimity.
