One who is able to withdraw his senses from sense objects, as the tortoise draws his limbs within the shell, is established in perfect knowledge.

Bhagavad-Gita-Chp-2-Verse-58-Shloka-HBR-Patel

Bhagwan Shri Krishna tries to explain to Arjuna the true characteristics of the individual that is situated in a perfect knowledge by using the analogy of a turtoise.

As soon as the tortoise senses danger it quickly withdraws under the protection of the hard shell. Similarly, the individual who is realized immediately withdraws the senses and reflects upon the inner self.

We are easily drawn to worldly pleasures with the aid of our senses. When we smell something delicious, immediately our mind starts to hover around that eatery, and our all senses and thought processes are focused on one thing, to savor that delicious food.

The desire arises through the sense of smell and now the entire body is paying the price by continuously pondering on it. Such is the case of a human but those individuals who are situated in perfect knowledge can easily withdraw from the above-mentioned temptation or any other temptation just like a tortoise withdraws itself inward.

The one’s who are realized in knowledge focus on the inner self and the ultimate truth and focus on the source of the eternal bliss. They do not endure to fulfill the materialistic desires.

They do not try to dowse fire by fuel but they focus on the ultimate truth by withdrawing the senses towards their inner self.

Knowing the true nature of things, we can easily divert from the temptations that arise out of material desires. It might be hard for us but for those who are Sthita-prajna, it is as easy as a tortoise withdrawing its limb.
