सञ्जय उवाच |
तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् |
विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदन: || 1||

Sanjay said: Seeing Arjuna overwhelmed by compassion and his mind grief-stricken, his eyes brimming with tears, Madhusudana ( Shri Krishna) spoke the following words.

Arjuna was reluctant to fight the battle that was his righteous duty. He justifies his inaction with words and in the end with action as seen by us in the last shloka of chapter 1. Shri Krishan was just listening to all the arguments made by Arjuna without uttering a single word to let Arjuna empty out all that was wrong inside him so that Shri Krishna can fill it with the eternal wisdom that will enlighten the generations to come.

In this shloka, Sanjay describes the condition of Arjuna who was under the influence of compassion to his relatives. Out of that compassion, he was blinded towards his righteous duty: to fight for ‘Dharma’ to destroy ‘Adharma.’ But like…
