तत: शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखा: |
सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ||13||
Thereafter, several conches, bugles, trumpets, kettle-horns, and cow-horns resounded simultaneously, growing into an overwhelming sound.
Taking a cue from the mighty roar of Bhishma, Kaurava army also joined the roar by blowing or playing whatever instrument they had and the entire battlefield was overshadowed with the overwhelming sounds that were emitted from those instruments, i.e. conches, kettledrums, bugles, trumpets, and cow-horns.
The readiness of the Kaurava is well displayed by this shloka. The much-needed support of Bhishma was already there with them but they might have a reasonable doubt in the real intention of Bhishma for fighting against Pandava. The roar of conch by Bhishma might have cleared that doubt and the entire army roared to display their readiness and new-found assurance.
