अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम् |
पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम् || 10||
Our army with unlimited capability is defended by Bheeshma’s strength while the army of the Pandava defended by Bheema’s strength, seems limited.
Bhishma might be the only one in the army of Kaurava that knew that he was on the wrong side of the dharma but being ethically committed towards the Kingdom of Hastinapur, he chooses to stay with Duryodhana. Duryodhan knew the might of the Bheesma and that’s what provided Duryodhan a solid platform for arrogant boasting.
Instead of evaluating the situation unbiasedly, Duryodhan indulges in belittling the might of the opposition.
This verse altogether would be altered if the meaning of the word ‘अपर्याप्तं’ — Unlimited/Inadequate. The verse can also mean that Duryodhan is indicating that his army is inefficient or inadequate due to Bhishma half-hearted commitment towards Kaurava. But, the situation indicates otherwise as Duryodhan nature is quite evident.
