Trying to understand Bhagavad Gita, one shloka at a time…

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच |
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||1||

Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjay, after gathering on the holy field of Kurukshetra, and desiring to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do?

First Shloka highlights the question asked by King Dhritarashtra. The question provides a glimpse of his overall personality. Dhritarashtra wants to know the events happening on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra.

He asks Sanjay for an update on the situation( Sanjay was able to see events happening miles away from him like you are reading this words. Because he was blessed with Divya Drashti by Maharshi Ved Vyas). With his divine vision, he described each and every event of the Mahabharat to King Drithrashtra and in turn indirectly to us.

After going through many interpretations of Bhagavat Gita, I found that one assumption was common. The possibility of a probable truce between the Pandavas & the Kauravas was totally unacceptable by Dhritarashtra.

His hate for Pandu and his sons were visible via his action/inactions in various Parva of the Mahabharata.

King Dhritarashtra doubted that under the influence of the holy land of Kurukshetra. his sons might sense the injustice done by them to Pandavas. The guilty conscience might force Kauravas to declare a truce and give half of the Kingdom to Pandavas. This step might hamper the envy that Dhritarashtra had nurtured in his heart for Pandu and his lineage.

So, Dhritarashtra wants to make sure that the War is on or not?

Through out my journey through Bhagavag Gita, i would take the English translation of the shlokas from this source.
